Rycroft, David, 1924-1997
This is a part of a tape marked 'Nguni vocal polyphony' which was edited by Rycroft. It includes songs from his field recordings. The collection includes examples of Xhosa, Swazi and Zulu vocal music. These songs display vocal characteristics typical of these groups. A group of Xhosa men sing s song which has a solo and a choral part. The chorus repeats a certain refrain at a lower pitch to the soloist. The tempo of the song increases and the rhythm is accentuated by clapping.
