    Item note: Nkongo (lamellaphone song). First recording made in company of members of African music course, including J. Blacking, Lois Anderson, Susan Bowles and others; Preceeded by analytical recording for tuning in order R, L, R (13 keys played left to right); Then the song. Performer's note: (mugwere) of the Mwisemena clan (a large clan). Recording note: Recorded at 3 3/4 ips. Recordist's note: In Peter Cooke's notes, this is PCUG64-8.23.A2 [announced as item 7].

African Harmony: *The musician plays the tuning of the lamellophone, which in terms of harmony outlines the scalar source. Notice, how some keys play more than one note at the sametime. This results in 3 and at times 4 part harmonies when played with other keys/toungues. *the musician uses the following concepts: -parallel dyads (block and broken) -rhythmic harmony -pedal notes -inherent patterns Note: This lamellophone part as with many of the other polyphonic parts noted in traditional african harmony can be understood or analysized in 3 ways: polyphonically, homophonically or both. in this case ech line is a melody unto itself, however, when combined they create harmonies that coincide with African prinicples of homophonic parallelism, pedal notes, rhythmic harmony and parallel dayds. How the musican and his audience hears the harmonies is difficult to determine.
