  • Description

    Dukar Dorjeen ritual at the Buddhist Tawang gompa (monastery) – musical part. This five day long puja is performed to fight against the ‘8400 delusions’ (attached to the humans), to protect people from obstacles, and to help people to attain Buddha-hood. The Dukar is the mighty thousand eyes and hands goddess, who is celebrated at this festival. In Tawang gompa it was once carried out annually; nowadays it is only performed every second year. The texts recited are taken from both the Kanjur and Tanjur books (words and comments of Buddha). As this puja is regarded as very important for the monks and the people living in Tawang it can only be performed by senior monks who have the ‘spiritual power’. Around 15 senior monks attend this service. All lamas, except the rinpoche (most senior monk) who is Tibetan, belong to the Monpa community. Musical instruments played are: damling (damaru; hourglass-shaped rattle drum), greeb (dril-bu; hand bell), bubchah (rol-mo; cymbals), dah (rnga; stick drum), kangling (rkang-gling; trumpet pair), gyaling (rgya-gling; oboe pair).
