Sound map - Your accents

The 'Your accents' interactive map displays a collection of recordings created between November 2010 and April 2011 and is a result of the British Library exhibition, Evolving English: One Language, Many Voices. During the exhibition people all over the world were encouraged to make a recording of their voice to help the Library capture contemporary English accents. The recordings available here were submitted online.

Contributors could either read a children’s story, Mr Tickle (© 1971 Roger Hargreaves), or a list of six words. Mr Tickle was selected as a relatively simple text would allow speakers of all ages to read confidently. Research also shows that a familiar text encourages a more relaxed, authentic speech style. The text contains a near comprehensive set of English vowel and consonant sounds and a range of connected speech process that define our accents worldwide. The six words were chosen as they are known to vary between speakers and often prompt a difference of opinion.
