Abstract
Part 1. Born in small agricultural village near Rhyl in N Wales in 1936. Description of village and parents and grandparents background. Mother a district nurse. One of three boys. Reasons he became a pharmacist and awareness of photography. Spoke Welsh at home, English at school. Description of early years: childhood being about avoiding boredom, stamp collection, bird's eggs, short wave radio, firearms. Middleton relatives. Father an engineer for LMS railway, died in 1950s, Philip Jones Griffiths (PJG) saw wartime film of him getting the treasures of the National Gallery into Welsh caves on tv in Hong Kong in 2000. Memories of a busy childhood, a lot going on but a sense of boredom and limited horizons, first film show. Reason for delay in visiting India. Description of his two brothers. Fondness for Wales and the Welsh, high level of education. Description of home, village, consciousness of history, a relative painting Rhyl pavilion grey so it didn't act as marker for German bombers, listening to the radio, looking at illustrated magazines. Interest in chemistry and explosives.
