    Part 3. Grace Robertson [GR] description of grandfather; physical appearance. Comments on mother; story of how GR’s parents met; father’s decision to give up medical degree (University of Edinburgh) and marry GR’s mother. Comments on father’s work; writing for newspaper in Glasgow; got job working for newspaper in Shrewsbury. Describes parents married lives; wedding; birth of first child; parents happiness; mother’s development of rheumatoid arthritis; parents feelings for each other. Describes mother being taken ill; father on job for BBC; vision of mother being rushed to hospital. Mentions parents life in Shrewsbury; free from family; parents contact with relations. GR describes father; problems with money; wrote short stories; belief in vegetarianism; had a duodenal ulcer. Comments on parents move to Didsbury, Manchester; father’s job as a night editor for the Manchester Express; memories of couple who lived down the street.

    Performer notes : Grace Robertson was one of the few women photographers to work for the magazine Picture Post. Career as a photographer began in 1949, with Simon Guttmann and the Report agency. Worked as a freelance for Picture Post from 1950-57 until it closed. Then photographed for other British and American publications until 1960. Retrained as a teacher, and returned to photography in the 1980s. Included in the touring exhibition Women Photographers in Britain, National Museum of Photography, Film and Television, Bradford (1986). Now active as a photographer and lecturer. Retrospective exhibition has toured UK and her book Grace Robertson, Photojournalist of the 50s was published by Virago in 1989. Daughter of journalist Fyfe Robertson and married to photojournalist Godfrey Thurston Hopkins.
