  • Abstract

Part 1 of 2. [00:00:00 - 00:33:04]. This recording was made by Iona Opie in Liss, Hampshire and records two separate occasions in 1981. The first was taped on 5th July, 1981 when Iona was recording her granddaughter Elizabeth Opie performing playground games and songs. The second was recorded on the Liss playground on 17th July, 1981 when Iona speaks to Julie, a girl who has recently moved to Liss from France. The recording begins with Elizabeth Opie's performance of three rhymes. She sings 'Order in the Court', 'I Had a Little Brother' and 'Rat-a-tat-tat' [00:00:00 - 00:03:20]. From [00:04:44] Iona is with Julie on the playground in Liss. Julie has been at the school for just one week. Iona asks Julie if she knows any clapping songs and she performs one for her in French. Iona and Julie then spend some time establishing the lyrics and the English translation [00:04:30 - 00:18:55]. Julie then sings a number of singing games including 'Sur le point d'Avignon' [00:22:07 - 00:24:07] and 'Ring a Ring o'Roses' which she recently learnt when in a swimming pool in England [00:28:40 - 00:28:39]. The recording finishes with Julie performing  a French singing game that she explains is similar to 'Oranges and Lemons' and based on an 'apple and a strawberry' [00:29:10]
