Abstract
Part 2 of 2. [00:00:00 - 00:11:51]. This recording continues on immediately from the C898-71-01 recording as schoolchildren from Oxford's St. Barnabas School continue to demonstrate and discuss playground games and songs with Iona Opie. The recording begins with a schoolgirl performing the singing game 'I'm Shirley Temple'. The other schoolgirls do not know this song and it is established that she learnt it when living in London [00:00:00 - 00:00:50]. The children then sing 'Down By the River' [00:00:51 - 00:04:17], the Brownie camp song 'The Brownie's Going to the Guide Camp' [00:04:44 - 00:05:21] and 'On a Mountain Stands a Lady' [00:07:53 - 00:09:37]. A further selection of songs that the schoolgirls learnt at Brownies are also sung [00:04:30 - 00:04:40] and [00:06:31 - 00:06:50]. A number of skipping songs are performed by the children. These are: 'Not Last Night but the Night Before' [00:05:54 - 00:06:26]; 'I'm a Little Girl Guide' [00:06:57 - 00:07:38] and 'Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear' [00:11:22 - 00:11:51]. Iona asks the schoolgirls what they call the children who turn the rope and they explain that they would call them 'twirlers' [00:09:58 - 00:11:03].
