  • Description

George Ewart Evans interviews Sam Friend who helped his mother when still at school by fetching milk, weeding and hoeing, fetching water using wooden hoops to carry the pails. They ate no meat except pork (father kept a few pigs). Used to catch sparrows using a fish-net and lamp, then skin them and make sparrow pie. He sings a song called 'Dick Turpin'. Remembers his friends that died in First World War.
