Part 5 (tape 3 Side A): View of future when left Coldstream Guards. Training as Chartered Accountant took five years without a degree. Boring work and accountancy correspondence course in spare time. George A. Touche and Co. (later Touche Ross) - JR's father knew George Touche well and arranged for JR to be articled there. Touche had approx 100 staff, office in London and small one in Birmingham, now employs approx 3,000. Anthony Touche, nephew of George Touche, later headed firm with JR - Anthony Touche at Eton with JR. History of George A. Touche & Co. Description of office in Laurence Pountney Hill, since demolished. Importance of impressing client by smart office etc. When JR first in USA was shocked by effort US made to bring in clients. Advice to sit on aisle seats in aircraft in order to talk around and chat up clients - worked dramatically. World of investment trust companies (part of JR's career) similar. George A. Touche had section of practice involved in investment management, split off in 1970 because of perceived conflicts of interest. Attitude to PR. JR's uncomfortable resignation from oil company, Ultramar, used PR firm. Influence of USA re drumming up clients. City ethics and regulation. Changing background of City backgrounds mean ethics no longer imbued. Would be in favour of people entering City attending courses in business ethics.
Interview with James Wogan Remnant, 3rd Baron Remnant, Director of the Bank of Scotland (1989–1996).
