    Part 8 (tape 5 side A): Tax problems relating to father's death continued. Father died in 1969, same year as BS got married. BS went on board of holding company three years after return to England so well informed about what was going on. BS would have stayed in USA at least for 4 or 5 years if father hadn't been ill, details of jobs he was offered, still regrets that didn't stay and work in New York. Would have been NY investment banker without taking on parental problems. Adored father, who passed on to BS what grandfather had told father - details. Working relationship with father was strongest in connection with family estate in Scotland. BS's relationship with his mother difficult because she was an awkward woman. [Interview 1.10.1992] Schroders a very well balanced firm, half capital and employees are outside London. Has sterling capital base in London. Reasons why Schroders little affected by recent problems re Lamont and Britain coming out of ERM and economic uncertainty. Schroders doesn't gamble. Manufacturing greatly affected by Lamont's actions, more a question for Chancellor than Schroders. Attitude to Lamont and economic problems. Effect of referendum in France re Maastricht. Proportion of Schroders' staff in UK and abroad. London office sites, Cheapside (main executive offices, corporate finance, investment banking, project finance, support services eg tax); Gutter Lane (investment management, commercial banking side); Old Jewry (back offices for Schroder Investment Management and other back offices). [slight break in recording] BS married in 1969, met wife, `Piffa' Holt, in Philippine Embassy - details. Piffa Holt had attended Sacred Heart School, Woldringham. First met Piffa in 1963, then again in 1967. Piffa thought BS very boring when first met. Piffa from Anglo-Irish family - details. Patricia Leonie Marry Holt, wife; BS's daughter called Leonie. Piffa brought up in Middle East until after war - details. Piffa read English at Oxford. Leonie also widely read.
