    Part 5 (tape 3 side A): Quality of wine in France not as good as BS's family cellar. Visits to balls in Paris with d'Espous family. Chance conversation in France led to BS going to Oxford, parents had never considered possibility nor had anyone at Eton suggested it. Further details of academic achievements at Eton. Year in France gave him first exposure to European culture, broadened him, much influenced by Madame d'Espous who taught him about French female psychology - details. Laure d'Espous' first encounter with a German at Schroders in England. Details of banking history of Mallinckrodt family. D'Espous family remained important to BS and to his sister who later stayed with them in France. Details of d'Espous children in adulthood. Laure d'Espous was BS's first girlfriend, didn't think of marrying her because knew had too much to do before that stage, platonic relationship. Went to Germany (Hamburg) after France. Had sports car by this stage, Hamburg still recovering economically from the war, BS repeated father's entry into Germany by arriving with far more money than local people. Henry Tiarks, colleague of BS's father. Details of Prussian family BS stayed with in Hamburg; Bavarians didn't talk to the Prussians - details. Was staying with Prussians who were socially one below the Schroders. Contrast with mix of different nationalities (ie Scots, Welsh, English) in same social class through English public school system. BS had six months learning German and six months working in Schroder bank in Hamburg. When returned to Britain asked parents if he could go to university. Hamburg Schroders had option of being bought by Schroder London and losing German identity, decided to go in with famous Hamburg firm and one in Frankfurt - details.
