Abstract
Part 1. Born Theydon Bois, Essex. Father a doctor. Second child, four sisters. Paternal grandfather a serious amateur painter, Lewis Fry [LF]. Describes LF’s studio and paintings. LF’s wife, an American. LF’s character. AF stayed with paternal grandparents. LF and wife met in Boston; expedition across southern America approx 1880 – recorded in watercolours which Anthony Fry [AF] now owns. Grandparents lived in Bristol then Westerham Great-grandfather worked in Fry’s chocolate firm. His career and family wealth. Fry’s sold in the 1930s but Fry family were chairmen until 1950s. Paternal grandfather had private income. Details of father’s sister, died in ‘flu epidemic post-World War I [WW1], in retrospect, a lesbian. Father educated at Clifton College, Bristol then to Cambridge, ship’s doctor in WW1 Paternal grandmother’s life. AF’s memories of grandparents’ houses. Great-grandfather had family bank, a great picture collector, details. Grandfather’s stories and paintings. Maternal grandparents. On death of grandmother, mother looked after by aunts. Maternal grandfather disappeared to New Zealand after wife died. Details of Rose, aunt, who brought up mother, Margaret Matthew [MM]. MM spoilt by her aunts. MM’s character.
