  • Abstract

    Part 6. John Latham (JL) talks about his journeys to London in the mid fifties to see his first non-establishment dealer - Jimmy MacMullen of the Obelisk Gallery. He talks about the style of his early work and what influenced it. [a lot of disturbance on the tape] JL describes how he felt the Gregorys viewed him as wholly unreliable, saying that they too lacked the vision to see the link that he had made between the common energies in art and science. Goes on to discuss the development of modern art through to the point of monochrome painting, John Cage's no sound music and his zero action painting. He moves this on to talk of parallels in Einstein's Theory of Relativity and his own discovery which he felt was able to visually express the 'O' Structure thesis of the Gregorys. This leads on to an explanation of his Time-Base works of the seventies. Discussing his use of conceptualism Latham talks about a work of 1967 called Event Structure Board which he saw as a new way of verbalising about the world using what had happened in art as a challenge to the academic perspective.
