  • Abstract

    Part 23. Marc Vaux [MV] continues discussion of leaving school; took job at Harwell as a chemistry lab assistant; describes his work there; recalls accident when mercury exploded in the lab and other dangerous accidents that occurred there; relationship with colleagues in the lab. MV comments on activities while doing job at Harwell; played in a jazz band called ‘The Swindon Town Stompers’; remarks on member of the band and their relationships. MV discusses early sexual encounters and losing his virginity. Comments on other activities during this time; lived with his parents at home; on going to the local Swindon museums and seeing a Leslie Cole exhibition. On going to London to go to Jazz clubs – saw ‘Kenny Graham and his Afro Cubists’; MV comments on playing jazz – never really wanted to be a musician; abandoned his instrument and committed himself 100 percent to art. MV comments on going to theatre while at Harwell; saw J.B. Priestley. MV discusses his time in the National Service; was in the Royal Air Force; was in signals so had to learn Morse Code; mentions his brother went into the Army.
