    Part 14: Tape 7: Side B: Marc Vaux [MV] continues comments on death; generally considers himself an “optimistic” person; would be devastated if anything happened to his daughter, Alex. MV describes in detail the bungalow in Swindon including the colour of the walls, wallpaper, furniture, vases, paintings and all other details. Discussion of what MV would buy if given a huge white space and unlimited funds – Piero della Francesca, ‘Flagellation’, as many Matisses as MV could afford, a Vermeer, Mondrians, a couple of Brancusis, Donald Judd, Cubists – Picassos or Braque, Juan Gris, some Miros and an Agnes Martin. MV comments on seeing contemporary exhibitions; generally a disappointment to him; some he’s liked include Howard Hodgkin, Giacometti. MV comments on his search for “peace and beauty” rather than the traditional pairing of “truth and beauty”. Remarks on how he finds peace in his life; mentions listening to music – jazz; on routine of his life bringing peace – life with his daughter. Comments on work/life balance and difficulties with this; on difficulty of having studio that’s not totally private; difficulties with intrusions by family members, environmental intrusions – rain leaking from ceiling, etc. Recalls story about the composer Schoenberg who upon his death, his sons didn’t know he was such a famous composer; mentions Giacometti’s wife sleeping in Giacometti’s studio; possible for family to be around but not know/understand what an artist, musician is doing. More on interactions with family while he’s painting in his studio. Remarks on recent trip to Paris and visiting the Louvre for the first time in 30 years; also visited Pompidou Centre.
