Polecat, Mustela putorius
This is one of two recordings of two male polecats calling. A close relative of the domestic ferret, polecats are now restricted to woodland, farmland and wetland areas of Wales. Their desirable pelts and reputation as a pest led to this mammal being hunted almost to extinction. These dark brown animals possess white markings across the muzzle and ears and are mainly seen at night when they emerge from the dens to hunt. Being carnivorous, polecats prefer small mammals, birds and reptiles although they will take other creatures they encounter. Typical vocalisations include chattering, barks, squeals and hisses.
