  • Abstract

Part 15: [31:11] Started teaching (1990) (at University of Central Lancashire); had been working as assistant curator at Rochdale Art Gallery; Catherine Gibson, then in relationship with David Alker who ran Fine Art course at Lancashire Polytechnic. Circumstances of applying for degree post, then taking up Foundation post; interested in seeing student through from beginning to end of a course. Becoming course leader by end of first year; a pattern in LH’s career. Taught Foundation for 8 years; plus one and a half days-a-week teaching degree students. Lives very close to college; can work in studio at end of college day. Moved to Preston after first term. Studio room; view. How MS found the house; twice as much as they could afford, so MS had to get job also. Constant battle for LH to work to afford the house. MS took assistant curator job at Rochdale; then became Head of MA at Manchester Poly, but left shortly. Finances became tight. MS’ ambitious ideas financed by LH’s wages - stressful period (1991-2001); eg. MS set up as artist’s agent, rented office, attempted to sell and lend work, but couldn’t sustain such a business in Preston. Meanwhile negotiating shows for herself and for LH. MS more upfront about their relationship. MS’ shows; eg.1990 artist in residence at Tate Liverpool - photographic project on sculptor Edmonia Lewis; also set of paintings in response to Francis Bacon; also writing. [18:29] Negotiating shows for LH; MS’ skills, better at talking to curators; eg. show at Wrexham, curator Martin Barlow. LH has never found it easy to self-promote. Has never turned down a show; now negotiates time deadlines - needs a year and half to make a show. Now more interested in making work for beautiful spaces, than prestige; eg.Oldham Art Gallery; Nguzo Saba Community Centre, Preston. High point showing in Gallery Five, Tate St Ives. Rochdale Art Gallery in late ‘80s. [31:11]
