  • Abstract

    Part 7. After two years at Ipswich Maggi Hambling (MH) won scholarship to Camberwell in 1964, almost 19. Self-conscious that she was a virgin. Dyed hair deep red, wore a lot of eye make-up, fox fur etc. Details of course at Camberwell. Excitement of living in London, lived in Lewisham with Corinne Campbell. Moved to share rooms in Coldharbour Lane with Keith Milow. Gay pub. Friendship with Antoinette Godkin and Robin Coombes. By end of first year MH had had her first sexual experience. Worked hard at Camberwell. Robert Medley. Adrian Berg; Berg's similarity to Lett Haines. Philemon and Baucis painting MH did whilst at Camberwell and was told she had been influenced by Kitaj; Kitaj became an idol. David Hockney. Got to know Kitaj later, Kitaj bought MH's drawings. Peter Hobbs, Gerry Hunt, Dick Lee on staff at Camberwell. Michael Salaman, Terry Scales. Robert Medley. Auerbach. Michael Podro. Etching. Agatha Sorel[?]. Lithography. Divided time between life room and forays into experimentation, eg Op and Pop art etc. Tim Platt. Bridget Riley lecture at Royal College important to MH in terms of showing that woman could get to top. MH felt had to be better than the males. Robert Medley and Patrick Procktor's preference for the male students. MH's first love affair. Keith Milow in love with Peter Woodcock, through Peter Woodcock met Suzanne Knealde, television producer[?] MH had 'dealt' with loss of virginity prior to affair with Suzanne Knealde.
