Abstract
Part 1. 9.10.91 Juliet Pannett born 15 July 1911, in Hove Sussex. One of seven children, happy but poor. Oldest sister died of meningitis before Juliet was born. Details. JP interested in art from age three. Professional artist aunt Kathleen Watson. Parents not artistic. Her first memory is of drawing. Father had no profession, took to gambling, left when JP was 14. Mother kept family together and got them through school. Details of early schooling. Move to Ealing, JP sent to live back in Hove when mother had seventh child. Memories of Hove. Mother took in paying guests. Unhappy in Ealing, bullied at school. Family moved back to Hove. Made friends, happy at school. Won second prize in national poster competition. Won four year scholarship to Brighton College of Art. Louis Genet taught her, still uses same palette. Worked hard, liked life class best. Very happy. Interest in collecting antiques. Determined to take studies seriously. Published drawings in 'The Cricketer' age 17, and the 'The Sussex Country Magazine', 'Sussex Types' series of portraits, shepherds and inhabitants, details, Pycombe crookmaker. After art school, taught PT at Buckwood Grange, paid 1 guinea per week, plus expense. Children age seven to nine. Helped to pay her way. Took folio to London, but had no luck.
