Abstract
Part 8. After Twelfth Night was in play by Ronald Miller, Murder From Memory. Details. Met Peter Ustinov as his first wife had small part. Staying with Peter Watson (PW) in Glasgow where David Archer moved with his bookshop. Met WS Graham, Robert MacBryde and Robert Colquhoun who were at Glasgow School of Art. David Gascoyne (DG) also stayed at PW apartment in Barclay Square when PW, SS, CC started Horizon. Got to know Lucian Freud, John Craxton, Michael Redgrave. Went to Horizon office, Fitzrovia, the Mandrake, the Colony Club. Went to Swing Club with Benedicta, German refugee wife of Freddie Gore. Incident in club. Saw a lot of Tambimuttu. Manchester Square Poetry London offices, nearest pub in Oxford Street, The Pig and Pound. When allies took Sicily Loius MacNeice of BBC, wrote piece about it, gave DG a small part. About Lucian Freud, John Craxton pupils of Cedric Morris. When acting in Ambassadors in London would visit Desmond Rhine (DR), by then married to Isabel. Bianca Loewenstein, German refugee sculptress, married to Prince worked in their studio. Met Norman Gouglas through DR. After war father retired moved to Vancouver Island. GD stayed behind, disastrous period. Had lodgings in South Ken, then invited to stay with Billy Crozier, married to Eric Crozier, Benjamin Brittan's librettist. DG amphetamine addict. DG lived with Robin Waterfield who had moved from Cecil Court to book shop near Marylebone Town Hall. RW great friend of Tambimuttu. Addictions; amphetamine, Benzedrine, details. Dr Blut, gave DG injection once a week cocktail of drugs, details. Other patients Julian Trevelyan (JT), Anna Kananne? JT serious breakdown at end of marriage to Ursula Darwin. DG had burst stomach ulcer, mother found him on floor, might have died. Hospital in Mortlake for six weeks. Went to USA with Katherine Raine (KR), got depressed. YMHA where Dylan Thomas had been previous year. DG, KR, WS Graham billed as three younger poets. 1951/2 first visit to USA. Drug addiction and depression details. Breakdowns. Wrote monologue for radio based on experience at Haughton? and inmates, Myself Discharged. Published in Resurgence.
