  • Abstract

    Part 8. Eileen Agar (EA) met Ezra Pound (EP) in Rapallo playing chess, where Max Beerbohm was also living. Description of EP. Joseph, Pound and WB Yeats used to walk together. Joseph (J) and EA both mentioned in the Cantos. J and EA had house in Portofino. EA on EP's attitude to bankers and money. USA wanting to extradite EP for trial in USA. EP put in hospital instead of hanging, Yeats helped to protect him. EA unaware he was anti-Semitic. About EP and wife Dorothy Shakespeare and mistress. Adrian Stokes (AS) also in Rapallo, and Margaret Mellis, AS's wife. EA used to meet Roland Penrose regularly after he moved to Kensington. EA sees his son, Tony Penrose. Effect of Brittany on EA's work. Staying at Perros-Guirec. When saw stones [rocks at Ploumanah] went to Brest and bought a Roliflex camera. Took lots of photos which later used in work. More or less copied photos. Took long time to do had block and couldn't think of anything more to paint and then decided to paint the rocks. Tenerife also an important place to EA. Had long period when couldn't paint after Joseph died. J friend of Oskar Kokoschka, had hardly enough money for a meal when J first met him, then he began staying at Hyde Park Hotel. EA's attitude to Royal Family, garden party at Buckingham Palace.
