Abstract
Mum and dad’s favourite programme was ‘Old Time Music-Hall’ and dad would sit there and go through all the songs, he used to sing the volunteer organist [Roud Folk Song Index No. 5378]. When he started going to festivals he noticed that he had songs in common with other singers. He and Fred Jordan had a lot of songs in common, Fred always said ‘you go and sing what you want, don’t mind me’ but he felt that ‘that’s not the way to do things is it?’ he ‘never sung anybody else’s song if they was there’. The younger generation ‘to me they sing a load of rubbish’. Bob Cann and Charlie Bate started him off on singing.
