Abstract
Norman Snell talks about the American brass band at the village fete in 1946. Before the war Beech Hill manor was a grand place. Stepfather was in a reserved occupation because he was in the forestry, he travelled to wherever timber was available. Remembers war being declared and the start of the home Guard when potential members were rounded up and his uncle was got out of bed to go to the first meeting with his twelve bore shotgun. Only just 20 people in the village now who would be old enough to remember VE day. Members of the VE day band: Fred Sowden; Reg Ford; Charlie Smith; Charlie Howard and Mrs Staniford [?]. Evacuees. Once later visited by one of the evacuees (Andy Anderson). It took a while for the evacuees to get used to their way of life. Playing football with the POW’s that were working on the farms. The Air crash at Emlett, thought the pilot was German but he was a Czech (he only died last year).
