Abstract
Singing without the dots – Dave Townsend talks briefly about the nature and context of West gallery music. What we are concerned with here is something more than just the spots on the page but what happened to the music in context and how it was performed and the methods used for learning the tunes [Bob Patten mentions the pride with which the Carollers at Odcombe haven’t written down their tunes since 1858]. Method for today’s workshop: words will be handed out but not the tunes, which must be picked up by ear.
