Abstract
Interview – Jim Speed talks about the village at the moment, all new faces. Years ago you had to make your own entertainment, step dancing on the flagstones at the New Inn. His wife danced more than he did. His family kept the New Inn for three generations. There used to be enough Speeds in Priddy to fill all the church pews. Names of the local step dancers, Arthur Weeks, Frank Pitman, Alfie Lovel (his wife’s father). Gilbert Weeks played squeezebox at the Hunter [Hunters Lodge Inn] while his brother Ernest played at the New Inn. Sharps informants, the Weeks family, farmer William King, John Voke (moved to Bristol), doesn’t remember Richard Barnard or James Bishop. John Vincent, his grandfather was a farm manager, his wife lived to be 93. Frank Dolford used to sing The Barley Mow [Roud Folk Song Index No 944]. Nobody here knows how to step dance now. Oliver Rendal was also a fine dancer ‘Oh ‘e were a dapster at it, I think he were about the best I’ve seen, he’d step dance and do the cart wheels in-between ’. People always danced in hob nailed boots.
