Abstract
Burning ashen faggots. Her family would spend all the morning of the previous day making them. Having a drink every time the withy ties burnt from a three-handled cup which had the farmers toast on it ‘Let the wealthy and great’ [Roud Folk Song Index No. 1603, related to: The jolly farmer – Roud 3043]. Revisiting her old house at Babcary. The faggot would be laid on the hearth from one end and ‘wonderful cider would be passed round’.
