Abstract
‘Granny’ Bryant talks about Goathurst Club 11th June (2nd Thursday in the Month. Men had a cooked lunch the women had tea. July Village fete. Men didn’t go on the club walk only the ladies. Dancing on the lawn. Music provided by the Spaxton band. Lady Worton was like a little doll and would dance with Gran and Mr Andrews (one of her gardeners) who were both beautiful dancers. The club finished years ago when the parson changed. 52 houses and 52 employees on the estate. Estate life, widows were given 10 shillings a week until they could claim pensions. The Rev Prince and the ‘Bode of Love’ [Agapemone (The Abode of Love) utopian cult founded in 1856]. Tale about the stone lions at the ‘Bode of Love’ moving at midnight to have a drink, Rev Prince only ‘had the ladies that got money, you see’. Ruth his ‘Spiritual Bride’, ‘but you never come across a nicer lot of people than what they was’, charitable works. One of the ladies would drink in the local pub from morning to night. Smyth-Pigott [The Rev John Hugh Smyth-Pigott the Rev Prince’s successor in 1899] being tarred and feathered in Bridgewater because of his improprieties. East Brent Harvest Home.
