Abstract
Ston Easton Mummers – Mrs Wilcox talks about her father, Oliver Gate, being a member of the Ston Easton Mummers at the end of the 19th Century. The characters that she remembers: The Turkish Knight, St George and the Doctor. The Turkish Knight blacked his face. She only remembers the line ‘In comes I’ [later remembers that it is ‘In comes I Father Christmas]. The custom died out soon after this time. Can’t remember where it was performed but thinks it was outside houses and Inns. Doesn’t know if this was the same group that performed at Chewton Mendip. Her fathers Christmas recitations ‘Trip to Bridgewater’ and ‘Tommy Nuttys trip to Bristol’. She was born at Gurney Slade. Music making in the family.
