  • Description

    Princess Magogo sings an ingcekeza song with Rycroft. This is a song sung at a girl's father's house when she reaches puberty. If the father is pleased with his daughter he will hold a public initiation ceremony called an ukwemula ceremony in her honour. The song is accompanied by ukunqukuza (hand clapping). Once the song is sung the father slaughters and ox and a goat in her honour and pours the gall from the goat on the girls head and attaches the gall -bladder to her. The gathering eat much meat and drink beer (Rycroft, D.,1975, 'A Royal Account of Music in Zulu Life with Translation, Annotation, and Musical Transcription', Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, Vol 38, No 2, 354). Very good quality recording. This is recorded in stereo.
