Description
Item note: Zingoma ze palu (Circumcision song / dance). Words encourage the boys to be firm. "Woomeme wogana musalle" - there is no joking friend, "Nimukyinamajeko baayaya" - brothers and sisters - dance. This music is played when the circumscision initates go on their travels around the local villages receiving gifts and encouragement before the ceremony for several days so that they are totally exhausted when the time for the cutting comes. Performance note: With one large drum and Zindonyi (small drums) and two Imbuutu (medium drums) one mulere (European type whistle flute); No bells on legs of these initiates; can be up to seven small drums (beaten with thin 12" sticks); Large drum beaten with heavy stick in left hand while RH makes muting actions; Imbuutu is played with hands; Can be up to three imbuutu drums. Performer's note: Members of the Banabahaala clan from Bulambuli Muluka. Recording note: Accumulator ran down so some speed variation at the end. Recordist's note: In Peter Cooke's notes, this is PCUG64-8.37.A3.
