In front of a traditional Bhunga round house with tile roof, Sanjote Nagar village, Banni area, Bhuj district, Kachchh, Gujarat.
Jiwabai (lead singer), Namabai (second singer), Bachchabai (singer), Hirabai (singer)
This Kachchi wedding song (shaadi) is usually sung by men (the groom’s closest friends). The men promise: “We’ll arrange everything for the marriage, buy the jewellery, order the bus for the marriage party” et cetera. Possibly the four female singers in this performance want to remind their men of all their promises. The singers are all from the Meqwar community in the Banni village Sanjote Nagar: Jiwabai (lead singer), Namabai (second singer), Bachchabai, and Hirabai. The Meqwar are Hindus and speak Kachchi language (north Indian language group).
