Al Koweity, Mulla Seoud (‘ūd / singer, male)
Sowt genre of Kuwait. The singer's name is also spelled 'Mulla Saud Al Kuwaiti' or 'Mulla Saud Kowaity'. He lived from 1900 to 1971 and was born into a tailor's family and trained as a tailor. Though there are very few recordings of him he was a well-known singer at the time. Mulla Saud Al Kuwaiti was in close contact with his better known contempary musicians Dahi Ben Walid (Bahrain; 1896/1898-1941/1951) and Abd El Latif Al Kuweiti (Kuwait, 1903-1975). On this recording he was probably supported by Dahi Ben Walid, Saleh Al Kuwaiti, Ali Al Merwas and Hamad Bu Taiban on violin, ‘ūd (?), mirwās and hand-clapping. Music: The title is 'Tannal khoudourou ala kathib .- Tannal khoudourou ala kathib pt.2 (Khayalli)', which indicates that the piece is continued on 'pt.2' (the second side). 'Khayalli' indicating a specific sowt style. A short melodic introduction (taqṣīm) starts the piece (violin and ud) and a violin solo concludes it.
