Part 1. Godfrey Thurston Hopkins [GT] describes childhood; letters from farther during World War Two (WWII); Roman Catholic primary school at Blackheath. Describes father; Robert Thurston Hopkins; employed as a bank employee and writer; relationship with father; expeditions together; father’s writing habits; father’s motorbikes, trips together on his bike; holidays to the seaside. Comments on farther being a writer; first becoming aware of this; visits from Henry Savage and Cecil Palmer (publisher); visits to the Savage Club, Saturday night events for members and guests; meeting musicians and artists; drawings GT saw there. Description of move to new school; moved to Brighton in 1922; attended council school, then Roman Catholic Boarding School at Burwash, East Sussex, England; baptised into Roman Catholic church; unhappiness at school; ran away and then allowed to leave; attended private school in Brighton. Describes working on school magazine; drew and wrote for magazine; beginning of GT’s creative interests; began to illustrate father’s books. Performer notes : Interviewee began photography in the Royal Air Force in World War 2. Freelance photojournalist from 1946-1950. Joined the staff of Picture Post from 1950-57. Advertising photographer in London from 1959-68. Active as a painter and writer since his retirement. Married to Picture Post photographer Grace Robertson. Work has been included in numerous exhibitions and publications, most especially those covering the Picture Post years.
