Abstract
Early interest in natural history. Joining BBC in 1952 making current affairs programmes. Starting Zoo Quest series in 1954. Travelling all over the world. Started using 35mm cameras and film stock, change to 16mm. Quality of sound produced on 12 recorder, difficult of marrying sound and vision. Early use of hand microphones, improvising noise and sound tracking. Animal communication. Recording gorillas in Rwanda. Recording whales under water. Isolating underwater noise without parabolic reflectors. Recording jumping lemurs. Interest in ethnic music.
