Abstract
Part 11. Andrew Forge [AF] as Tate trustee, continued; beginning of Sir Norman Reid’s [NR] relationship with him; AF a painter and a “lucid” interpreter of painting. NR’s relationship with St Ives set; respectful of their temperaments and calling, adapted himself to their peculiarities; Henry Moore contrasted with Gabo; NR never close to Moore. Gabo’s personality and “touchiness” if undervalued; anecdote about NR’s daughter visiting Gabo in Connecticut – “Did you know Mondrian?” “Yes. And Mondrian knew me.” Gabo’s daughter, Nina, also an artist; Gabo a disciplinarian parent; Gabo’s wife Jean saw her role as supporting Gabo, not always sympathetic to Nina’s needs; Jean was Gabo’s “slave”.
