The Kudelski Nagra was manufactured in Lausanne, Switzerland by a Polish immigrant, Stefan Kudelski (‘Nagra’ means ‘records’ in Polish). It was the first portable, self-contained tape recorder, using a wind up motor to provide power both to the recording head and the motor. In the early 1960s the comedian Jerry Lewis happened to visit Kudelski’s factory and brought the first Nagra to Hollywood. It was immediately adopted by the studios and independent filmmakers worldwide. Kudelski himself was later to be awarded Oscars for his technical achievements.
