The British Library The British Library Kodungallur Devi, Nanduni Pattu by Neelakundan RKDATX0029XX-01 RK DAT 29 This piece “Kodungallur Devi” recounts the life of the guardian goddess of the temple in Kodungallur (central Kerala) and is part of the nanduni pattu vocal genre. Nanduni pattu is performed in temples dedicated to the goddess Bhadrakali or Bhagavati. The nanduni is a two stringed lute played with a wooden plectrum. The upper string is used for the drone and the lower for the melody. Tiny brass cymbals indicate the beat of the song. Neelakundan is the lead singer and plays the nanduni while Rajan sings and plays the cymbals. They sing in the south Indian language Malayalam.
