The British Library The British Library Ayyappan Pattu RKDATX0025XX-01 RK DAT 25 This piece, belonging to the ayyappan pattu vocal genre, is dedicated to the goddess Saraswathy; the guardian for the arts and education. Ayyappan pattu is performed in temples dedicated to the god Shasta or Ayyappa, and at festivals specially organised for the pilgrims leaving for the famous Ayyappa temple in Sabarimalai in South Kerala. On these occasions the whole life-story of the ancient South Indian god Ayyappa is sung to the pilgrims. All five singers play the percussion instrument udukku. Udukku is a small bifacial vessel drum, which is held in the left and struck by the right hand. The singers and udukku players (male): Attery Govindan Nair (leader), Samanathan Nair, Attery Kuttan Nair, Kesavan Nair (lead singer) and Pradeep Nair. They sing in the south Indian language Malayalam.
