<dcterms:abstract>Bill Brown talks about being in Germany for VE Day. He shouldn’t have gone to Germany having served in the Far East for four and a half years, but he didn’t get on at Catterick and was sent to Holland in the 52nd Lowland Division. Even though they knew that the war was over there was still a lot of skirmishing because of fanatics who wouldn’t surrender. Sent down to Bergen near Belsen. ‘VE Day wasn’t a great day as far as I was concerned’. After things calmed down they were sent to a site near Minden by the river Weser. It was decided to destroy the factories there and this was done without destroying the giant statue of Kaiser Wilhelm that was also there. In 1946 he was asked if he would like to join one of the special signals units under the Foreign Office that was taking over the responsibility of occupying Germany. He remained there until 1969.</dcterms:abstract>
