C811/102 This recording is a part of a collection of musical examples which Rycroft has taken from his field recordings to accompany his paper on continuity in Zulu music (Rycroft, D. 1977. 'Stylistic continuity in Zulu Town Music'. In Essays for a Humanist an Offering to Klaus Wachsmann. New York: The Town House Press, pp. 216-260). This is a dubbing of a recoridng made in 1973. This is a recording of a man, Sitandi Mabuza singing a song in Siswati, self accompanied on the sikhelekehle friction bow. This is a single-stringed bow which has a large tin as a resonator and a long wooden stick as a neck. The bow player produces three fundamental notes; there is the open note of the string, and a further two stopped notes (created by the thumb and the fore finger). These fundamental notes have corresponding harmonic partials which are caused by the player's bowing technique The fundamental notes and the harmonic partials are closely related to indigenous Swazi gourd bows (Rycroft, D., 1977, p. 246-7).
