C811/83 This song is a recording made by Rycroft in 1976 of volunteers from the IVS (International Volunteer Council) singing African songs. In this recording one can hear a group of people singing a well-known Southern African song 'Inkosi Sikelel' iAfrika'. This song was composed as a hymn in 1897 by Enoch Sontonga, a teacher from Johannesburg. It became popular in South African churches and also as a protest song at political rallies. This song became an anthem for the oppressed people of South Africa and was sung as an act of defiance during the apartheid regime. On the 20th of April 1994 an adaptation of the original song became the national anthem of South Africa. This version is sung in isiXhosa and Sesotho.
