This was Cooke's first return visit to Uganda since 1968. Many of the informants were old friends who had survived 19 years of political turmoil and war. Conditions in southern Uganda were bad - the infrastructure of the country was in ruins and manufactured goods were in desperately short supply. Northern Uganda was still at war with the new President of Uganda, Museveni; The 1987 visit was made possible through the generosity of the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland and the Travel and Research Committee of the University of Edinburgh. Performance note: Begins with rattles, and an address by Mr. Fulanya addressing the gods then followed by drumming (1'03"), rattles and singing (at 1'15"), later ululation. Then barking sounds made by Maganda and others becoming possessed (from 5'22"). Change of song at 7'35". Drumming eventually stops (c 7' 50") and then follow many exclamations by Maganda with shaking of rattles accompany his talk. Then (11'43") after a pause, he begins another song. Others join in and further singing with kazoos and drummming to take participants out of trance again. Recording note: Tape runs out a 12'15".
