					<dc:identifier>C0023X0033XX-06</dc:identifier>
					<dc:source>C23/33</dc:source>
<dc:description>Item note: Continuation of musical play. Luganda religious song, followed by scene in Kigezi. Bow harp songs sung in (modern) West Nile style. Bwola dance ("national" dance of Acholi). This was Cooke's first return visit to Uganda since 1968. Many of the informants were old friends who had survived 19 years of political turmoil and war. Conditions in southern Uganda were bad - the infrastructure of the country was in ruins and manufactured goods were in desperately short supply. Northern Uganda was still at war with the new President of Uganda, Museveni; The 1987 visit was made possible through the generosity of the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland and the Travel and Research Committee of the University of Edinburgh. Performance note: Sung with drums in harmony (South African style?), not in Kiganda rhythm. Some very good voices. Dialogue followed by Kiga dance songs. Manaku doesn't like it and decides to go off to Arua for a job. Interrupted by Manaku who is later made to listen to Madi(?) osegu dance (using Osegu stopped flutes in ensemble plus long drum). Manaku tries to talk to young girl then reads letter of appointment as provincial commissioner for north and eastern Uganda. Goes off to Acholi land. Followed by dance (Presumably a dance of welcome to Manaku). Recording note: Tape runs out before end of dance. Recordist's note: In Peter Cooke's notes, this is PCUG87.7.1 - 7.4.</dc:description>
