A member of the crow family, these shy birds emit a harsh carrying screech. They are found across the British Isles, except northern Scotland, and prefer dense habitat such as broadleaved and coniferous woodland, although they have begun to move into more urban areas such as parks and gardens. Possessing a distinctly colourful plumage, jays have a particular love of acorns, although they also feed on seeds, nuts and insects.
