The red deer is the largest land mammal in Britain and can be found grazing in open woodland, moorland and mountainous areas. The impressive figure of a stag complete with a full ‘rack’ of antlers conjures up images of the Scottish highlands where the species is most abundant. Red deer also have royal connections, being the favourite trophy of many royal hunting parties, and explains why they are a common sight in royal parks such as Richmond. As the name suggests, these deer have a red-brown coat which dulls in colour during the winter months. Stags are much more vocal during the autumn rutting season when they start gathering females for their harems, and will produce loud guttural roars and barks.
