National Life Stories Collection: General C464/17 Nobel Peace Prize-winner and nuclear physicist Joseph Rotblat in conversation about his life and work. A key figure in the development of the atomic bomb, he left the US government's Manhattan Project once it became apparent that Nazi Germany did not have the capability to build a bomb of its own. Part 28: Cyrus Eaton became guest at Pugwash but had no further direct relationship, he died in 1969. JR talks about relationship with Cyrus Eaton's daughter - in 1982 another meeting was held again at Pugwash. Talk about political problems with western Governments due to relationship with Russian scientists. The Dodds Committee was sat up in USA (under Eisenhower) to investigate Pugwash members - JR explains reasons for suspicion and why no-one was sent to take part in Russian meeting. JR explains other problems with people from the west, political problems and his efforts to remain neutral. Later the Government tried to use Pugwash for its own purposes, JR refused and explains why but he kept Government informed on proceedings. JR got C.B.E. in 1964 - from Harold McMillan and tells story how he met the queen. JR is now (2000) organising a meeting in Cambridge for which ¹110.000 is needed. JR got Einstein Prize for Pugwash in 1992. He explains how Pugwash is financed in present day: (1) contributions from national groups amd (2) money from foundations e.g. McArthur foundation, Rowntree Foundation in the U.K. are the main sources.
