Search tips

Enter one or more search terms in the search box and click the “Search” button.

If you wish to search only one category, select it from the drop-down menu next to the search box.

The Search system will find records containing all your search terms (it will not find records containing only some of your search terms).

Use only the standard English alphabet (a-z) and Arabic numbers; do not include accents, diacritics, or punctuation.

If you do not get any search results:

  • Make sure your search terms are spelled correctly
  • Try using fewer or different search terms
  • Try using more general search terms
  • Try searching the British Library Sound Archive Catalogue, or use the search box on the British Library home page.

If you get too many results, try repeating the search with one or more extra search terms or limit your search to one category.

The present search system does not support Boolean searching (AND, OR, NOT operators), phrase searches, truncation or variant spellings. Advanced searching features will be added at a later date.

You can search tagged recordings by entering 'tag:term' in the search box (where term represents any tag you want to look for). E.g. 'tag:train' will give you all the recordings which have been tagged with 'train'.
