Part 1. 1962 in Edinburgh. Father from Edinburgh and mothers family from Orkney. Brought up in Edinburgh. Family background - first member of the family to go to University. Greatly encouraged by her mother to go into the arts, especially dance. Decided very young to be an artist. Wendy McMurdo's (WM) schooling and her passion for drawing which lead onto an interest in printmaking and then onto montage. Talks about her classical training and how that has informed her art. Exploration of pictorial space done in Italy during Art School. Returns to schooling and how arts is critical for early learning and how she enjoyed primary school. Mother's working life. Attitude toward religion and politics in the family. Talks about secondary school and attitudes towards it with regard to class. Attended Edinburgh College of Art at 17. Describes the courses and the school.
