  • Abstract

    Part 13. Recalls working with journalist John Suchet, whose grandfather, Jim Jarche, was a pioneering photographer. Describes drift of photographers into television in the 1950s and 60s; made British TV the best in the world; compared with the Picture Post’s increased interest in long photo stories. CO a great fan of the pre-WW1 German magazine Simplisisimus. Recalls the heyday of Sunday Times magazine. CO tried to make Creative Camera a distinguishable brand; denies that it was overdesigned; in fact magazine was designed to maximize the number of photos, and make large amounts of text impossible. Likes the fact that the magazine took a global view of photography and photojournalism; used short book reviews, which only told the reader what the book was about. That would often be enough.

    Performer notes : Publisher and collector. Owned Creative Camera magazine during its formative years in the late 1960s and early 1970s until the early 80s. Main photographic interests include the history of the Worker Photographer movement and photography in Eastern Europe. Active in the revival of British photography in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Also a world expert on racing pigeons. Now retired and living in London.
